Back to Realelvish

Since the Sindar consider the Elven writing systems as pretty useless, this lesson is optional.

Even though there is no word for "zero" in Sindarin that we know of, we are going to learn how to write it. This system was developed by the Noldor, so it does look quite similar to their writing system. Numbers as adjectives are spelled out, not written with number symbols.

Base Ten

00
112233
445566
778899

Sometimes dots are put over the numbers to distinguish them from letters.

Now, as you recall, numbers are listed backwards in Sindarin. So, 2046 would be written 6402.

ex4a
Eneg cangaen tadveneg "6402" = "2046"

Base Twelve

So, for counting in base-twelve, you need two more base numbers.

10101111

ex4b
Cae lephoth tolothveneg "10+0+5(122)+8(123)"

Homework

For your homework, write out the numbers and sentences from your previous homework, both Base Ten and Base Twelve.
