Our Sindarin Names
How to Use This Namelist
I decided to collect our names that I have translated and put them in a list. This is all well and good, but since we're trying to bridge cultures as well as languages, I have a few notes for you to take into account when using it.
Firstly, and most importantly, note that many of these names are inappropriate for Arda. For example: Elves don't use the names of the Valar or heaven forbid, Eru, in their own names, and a large proportion of our names have the word "God" in them somehow. So, don't use this name list to name characters from Arda! This list is only for us!
The list is alphabetical, but I listed as many variants of the same name as I could think of under the most common form (in English) of that name. When looking for your name, realize that it might be version, variant, or pet form of another name. That's why I advise using your browser's search function (Ctrl+F) to look for it.
The translations themselves were primarily taken from a website called Behind the Name. When that didn't work, I'd go looking for clues to its nationality by searching imigration databases and the like, hoping to find a language to start my search in. And if that didn't work, I looked at what the baby books said it meant. If I still couldn't find it, I gave up and made a phonetic translation. Because translation is not just words, but ideas, there are many translations that aren't word for word.
- When a name used a word for the Judeo-Christian God, I used Eru's name. Likewise, when the name uses some form of "angel" or a god of a polytheistic religion, I used the words for the Valar, and so on and so forth.
- Many of our names used to be surnames and thus have translations like "Son of Soandso" or "Soandso's Family". For those, I just direct you to the "Soandso" entry.
- Another really common ploy in our names is to use the name of a nationality or race as a person's name. When that happened, I gave a phonetic translation of the nationality or race into Sindarin, as well as the origin meaning of the word (if I could find it).
- And some names are utter jibberish or their meanings have been completely lost over time. For those, I gave a phonetic translation into Sindarin.
- Unfortunately, unlike the character name lists, the snazzy Javascript lists with all of the name suffixes already attached wouldn't work. I used the Sindarin words as the keys to showing those mini-tables, and many of our names have the same translations, just from different languages. Also, there are far too many names at this point for me to make all of those names for you, not to mention girls are given boys' names and boys are given girls' names and some people have first names as last names and vice versa in our culture, so I couldn't predict which name suffixes to use. I tried to explain as best I could how to attach name suffixes. If you have any questions, feel free to drop into the forums and ask.
