Can you translate dialogue for me?

Certainly! Answer the following questions; then visit the Contact Us page or the Forum.

  1. Quote what you want translated.
  2. In what context, what occasion, or where was it said?
  3. Who said it? (What race is the character?)
  4. What time period is it? (What language do you want it translated into?)

Please make sure you don't use any modern slang in the sentences you send us, slang often has multiple meanings that we would have to choose from, and we may not know the slang word's meaning. Also, find other ways to say 'Yes' (It is so), 'Sorry' (I am sad for you), 'Please' (for my pleasure'), or 'Help' (I need healing!) if you must use them. Those words cause us a world of trouble when people ask for translations, because no such words exist in Elvish!

What is Grelvish?

'Grelvish' is a slang term for 'Grey Company Elvish'. The Role Players at Grey-company.org made a language for their RPG that was vaguely based on Quenya. Their RPG has nothing to do with Tolkien or his magnificant creation, but people often mistake Grelvish for Tolkien's Elvish. (Despite the fact that there are many warnings on the website stating that they have nothing to do with Tolkien!)

How can I tell if some Elvish is Grelvish?

Grelvish is very easy to pick out, just look for these three things:

  1. The words: amin, lle, tel', saes, and naa.
  2. Multiple vowels, as in the Grelvish word 'Namaarie'.
  3. An apostrophe in the middle of a word, at the beginning of a word when there is no word before it, or at the end of a word when there is no word following it.

Ask the person who quoted the Elvish where she/he got it from. If he or she got it from a fanfiction or doesn't remember where he or she found it, it's best not to trust it. The Grey Company is also called 'Tel'Mithrim'.

How do I put accents over my letters?

If you have MSWord:

  1. Click on [Insert] in your menu bar.
  2. Go down to [Symbol] and click on it.
  3. Find and double click the accent that you want!

If you want to do key stroke accents in MSWord:

  1. Click on [Insert] in your menu bar.
  2. Go down to [Symbol] and click on it.
  3. Find and click once on the accent that you want to use.
  4. Look at the bottom of the Insert Symbols window to 'Keystrokes' and memorize the keystroke you need.

Here's a chart of keystrokes for accents: (Note: there are no keystrokes for Ŷ or ŷ. You can make keystrokes for them, see your MSWord 'Help' section, or just copy and paste the symbol.)

Table of keystrokes for accented characters
To insert Press
á, é, í, ó, ú, ý CTRL+'(APOSTROPHE), the letter
Á É, Í, Ó, Ú, Ý
â, ê, î, ô, û CTRL+SHIFT+^(CARET), the letter
Â, Ê, Î, Ô, Û
ä, ë, ï, ö, ü, ÿ CTRL+SHIFT+:(COLON), the letter
Ä, Ë, Ï, Ö, Ü, Ÿ

(This chart was taken from the Microsoft Word 'Help' section-Insert an international character by using a shortcut key)

If none of this works, the best way to do them is to copy and paste.

Can I put some of the stuff on your website onto mine?

Simply put: No. That's plagiarism.

I set this place up so that you can use the phrases and names; and I encourage you to use them for whatever you need them for. However, you may not copy entire pages of my website onto yours.

There are only three things that you may take from my website and put on yours: the link buttons, the 101 Sindarin Phrases, and the 101 Quenya Phrases. I made these two phrasebooks just for people wanting Elvish sections on their websites, hoping to stamp out the Arwen-Undomiel phrasebooks which plague our fandom. It does have its own Terms of Use though, please read it carefully.
