Timeline of the Great Years of Third Age

Donated by Gildor Inglorion

The Quest for Erebor, the War of the Ring and the years before the beginning of the 4rth Age. All the dates given are according to the Shire Reckoning, the calendar of Hobbits.

Notes on the Shire Reckoning

The Shire Reckoning is different from our calendar and Tolkien translated only the month names, so some things about it must be made clear: First of all, all months have 30 days. That means that Solmath, has 30 days, although translated as "February" (cf. Solmath 30, 3019 when the Entmoot begun, so don't be surprised when you see the date "February" 30).

You must also note the Yuledays which were 2 days between Foreyule ("December") and Afteryule ("January") and belonged to no month. The Shire year did not begin on "January" 1, but on Yule 2. Similarly it didn't end on "December" 30 (NOT "December" 31 since all the months had 30 days each), but on Yule 1. You must note that the first day of the Shire year (Yule 2), corresponds to our December 23, and therefore Afteryule 1 ("January" 1) corresponds to our December 24.

Except the Yuledays, the Shire Calendar had also the Lithedays. They were 3, and the middle one was called Midyear's Day or Midsummer which was considered the middle day of each year. The Lithedays also belonged to no month and their position was between Forelithe ("June") and Afterlithe ("July"). The Midyear's Day corresponds to June 23 of our calendar.

Day by day calendar of 2941

Tolkien did provide a chronology of 3018 describing the Fellowship's quest, but never provided a chronology of Bilbo's. Of the year 2941 only April 27, Midyear's Day, September 22 and May 1 of 2942 are clearly stated (or traceable) by Tolkien.

There had been various attempts to calculate the dates of the other events. I provide the speculations of 2 different sources: the chronology from Middle-earth science pages where Lalaith calculated many events of the voyage (and Durin's day) based on the Moon phases described in the book. I also provide the dates from Atlas of Middle-earth by Karen Wynn Fonstad who was based on the distances and travel times.
